In June 2018, 50-year-old Prakash found a painful ulcer on his tongue. His family physician treated the ulcer with medication that helped alleviate the pain but did not decrease the size of the ulcer. After 6 months of no improvement, Prakash was directed to the Tata Memorial Hospital, where he was diagnosed with tongue cancer.
He was immediately put on chemotherapy. However, having already paid Rs. 23,000 for diagnostic testing and imaging, they did not have the funds to pay for his treatment. The hospital, therefore, helped arrange Rs. 40,000 for his first cycle of chemotherapy. This, however, has rendered him weak and unable to work, thereby compromising his family’s monthly income.
He has been advised to continue his cycles of chemotherapy and get an MRI to determine his eligibility for surgery, followed by radiation. Therefore, he needs Rs. 1,50,000 to complete his treatment and ensure that his children will not have to sacrifice their education, in lieu of their father’s diagnosis.
